Premium Car Audio — New Zealand

Big Sound.
Small Package.

The Suzuki Jimny is one of the most characterful vehicles on New Zealand roads. Capable off-road, distinctive on it, and with an owner community that takes their Jimnys seriously. The factory audio is the one area where the Jimny genuinely lets itself down — two speakers in the 3-door, four in the 5-door, no tweeters, no subwoofer, and a cabin that's acoustically hostile to begin with. The good news is the Jimny responds exceptionally well to a properly installed audio upgrade. The compact cabin, when treated correctly, actually works in your favour — less space to fill means a smaller, well-chosen system sounds better than a larger system in a bigger vehicle. We've worked on Jimnys across the range — 3-door and 5-door, pre and post-2018. The approach is always the same: practical, clean, and matched to how the vehicle is actually used. One more thing worth knowing: on some model years it's possible to replace the factory head unit with an aftermarket unit featuring wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. Whether that's suitable for your specific model depends on the year and configuration — ask us and we'll tell you exactly what's possible.

Worth knowing

The Jimny cabin is compact, hard-surfaced, and significantly affected by road and wind noise — particularly at highway speeds. Sound deadening is included in every audio upgrade package and is also available as a standalone service. Treating the acoustic environment the speakers work in makes as much difference as the speakers themselves.

3-Door

Jimny 3-Door

The 3-door Jimny leaves the factory with just two speakers and no tweeters. It's the most common Jimny on NZ roads and the one we work on most. Tweeters mount in the door sail panels — the correct position for proper imaging in this cabin. Even System One makes an immediately audible difference in a 3-door Jimny.

5-Door

Jimny 5-Door

The 5-door Jimny steps up to four speakers but remains completely standard — no tweeters, no subwoofer, no premium option in the range. The longer wheelbase gives slightly more cabin space to work with, and the additional doors open up more deadening opportunities. The upgrade path is the same as the 3-door, with the option to address rear doors if required.

Standalone

Sound Deadening

Road noise (or OFFROAD noise, right?), wind noise, and drivetrain noise are significant in the Jimny cabin — particularly at highway speeds. Sound deadening is available as a standalone service, covering front doors, rear doors, roof, tailgate, cargo floor, and under-seat areas. It's one of the most cost-effective upgrades available for the Jimny and makes every journey more comfortable. Already included in all three audio upgrade packages — no need to add separately if you're doing a full system.

Factory audio specification and head unit replacement options vary by model year and variant. Contact us with your specific Jimny before committing to a system — the right build depends on what's already in the car and how you use it.

  • Compact underseat subwoofer
  • Sound deadening (doors)
  • Power kit, cables and minor parts
  • Installation

The simplest improvement: a compact underseat subwoofer and front door deadening. No speaker changes, no complexity. Just proper bass — the frequency range the factory system simply cannot produce — and a quieter, better-sealed cabin to hear it in. In a small cabin like the Jimny, the difference is immediate.

New Zealand's car audio specialists.

Rapid Radio has been installing and calibrating car audio systems in Auckland for over two decades. We work across the full spectrum — from everyday EVs through to Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Tesla — with every build calibrated by ear to the vehicle and the owner. No compromise installs. Factory-clean finish. Every time.

No two builds are the same — and that's the point.

Because the DSP is the engine of every upgrade, the hardware around it is entirely flexible. Entry-level speaker sets will sound dramatically better than the factory system — and world-class reference components will do things the factory engineers never imagined. We work across the full range, from practical upgrades to reference builds, and every system is calibrated by ear before you leave.

Components are specified on merit for every build — not habit.

How long does the installation take?

Most Jimny audio upgrades are completed in a single day. System Three builds with custom subwoofer enclosures may require longer — we'll give you a clear timeframe when you book.

How much does a Jimny audio upgrade cost?

Pricing depends on the system and your specific model. System One starts from under $1,000 installed. System Two and Three pricing varies based on component choices and subwoofer solution — contact us for a quote specific to your Jimny.

Will an audio upgrade affect my factory controls or features?

Every system we install leaves the factory head unit and all factory controls in place unless you specifically opt for an aftermarket head unit upgrade. CarPlay, Android Auto, and steering wheel controls all work exactly as before. Nothing is removed. Nothing is bypassed.

Does the small Jimny cabin make audio upgrades harder or easier?

The compact Jimny cabin actually works in your favour for audio. Less space to fill means a smaller, well-chosen system sounds better than a larger system in a bigger vehicle. The challenge is road and wind noise — which is why sound deadening is part of every upgrade package. Treat the noise first, then the audio performs significantly better.

Where do the tweeters go in a Jimny?

Tweeters mount in the door sail panels — the triangular panels at the front of the door where the mirror attaches. It's the correct acoustic position for proper imaging in the Jimny cabin and looks clean and intentional. No cutting of the dashboard or A-pillar required.

What's the difference between the 3-door and 5-door Jimny for audio upgrades?

The 3-door Jimny has two speakers from the factory — no tweeters, no subwoofer. The 5-door steps up to four speakers but is otherwise equally basic. Neither has a premium audio option available. The upgrade path is the same for both — the main difference is the 5-door has rear doors that can be treated with deadening if required.

Can you just do sound deadening without an audio upgrade?

Yes — sound deadening is available as a standalone service for the Jimny and is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available. Road and wind noise in the Jimny cabin is significant, particularly at highway speeds. We can treat the front doors, rear doors, roof, tailgate, cargo floor, and under-seat areas — either as a full programme or in stages. Sound deadening is also included in all three audio upgrade packages, so there's no need to add it separately if you're doing a full system.

Can I replace the factory head unit in my Jimny?

Yes — on some model years it's straightforward, on others there are factory display functions integrated into the head unit (such as fuel economy readouts) that need to be considered. Whether that's worth sacrificing depends on the individual and how they use the vehicle. If you've damaged your factory screen, an aftermarket replacement is a fraction of the Suzuki dealer cost and a genuine upgrade at the same time. Ask us about your specific model year and we'll tell you exactly what's possible.
