Better Audio.
Any 70 Series.
There's still nothing quite like the Toyota 70 Series Land Cruiser. Nobody buys one for the audio. The factory system is beyond basic — small dash speakers firing at your feet, no tweeters worth mentioning, no bass, no real presence. It's an afterthought in a vehicle that isn't. And of course the amount of road noise that leaks into the cab doesn't help matters either. We can fix that. Every body style, every year. Looking for the Hilux? That's a different vehicle with its own dedicated page — see the Hilux audio upgrade page here.
LC70 Single Cab Ute (LT)
The two-door single cab — the workhorse of the range. Compact cab, front-only audio focus. All three systems are available. At System Three level, subwoofer placement is under the seat or behind it. Sound deadening in the front doors makes a significant difference in a cab this size.
LC70 Double Cab Ute (LT / LX)
The four-door dual cab — the most common 70 Series on NZ roads. Front and rear door treatment available at System Three level. The rear seat area provides good subwoofer placement options, and the dual cab configuration means rear passengers benefit from the full system upgrade as well.
LC70 Wagon (LX)
The five-door variants — the LX Wagon in current NZ production, and the Troop Carrier (LC78) which isn't sold new in NZ but turns up regularly as a used or grey import, and we've worked on a number of them. Both share the same audio challenge: no rear seat cavity for subwoofer placement. The sub goes underfloor or along the rear cargo wall. The larger cabin also benefits more from sound deadening than any other 70 Series configuration — the Ultimate Sound Deadening Package is particularly effective here.

- Compact underseat subwoofer
- Power kit, cables and minor parts
- Installation and calibration
The factory 70 Series audio has small 4" speakers mounted underneath the dash, firing down towards your feet. System One works within these factory locations — but makes them significantly more effective. Replacement dash speakers and a tweeter set lift the sound up towards ear level for the first time, adding width, separation, and the upper frequency detail the factory units simply can't produce. A compact subwoofer under the seat handles the bass the dash speakers can't reach. It's the entry point — and it's a genuine, immediately noticeable improvement over what Toyota provided.

System Two is where the 70 Series audio transforms — because System Two puts speakers in the doors for the first time. Custom speaker mounts are fabricated and fitted into the front doors, creating proper speaker locations where Toyota fitted none. 6" component speakers and tweeters are installed into these mounts, moving the sound up from the dash and into the doors where it belongs. A micro amplifier — compact in size but not in power — drives the new speakers properly. A compact active subwoofer handles the bass. Sound deadening goes into the front doors for audio performance, and the rear doors for road noise reduction. The difference compared to System One — and compared to factory — is substantial.

- Front speaker and tweeter component system
- 6" rear speakers
- 10" slim subwoofer and enclosure — rear seat area or underfloor depending on body style
- 2-channel amplifier — front speakers
- Mono amplifier — subwoofer
- Sound deadening — all four doors
- Cable, speaker wire and minor parts

The complete build. Custom door pods front and rear, full component speakers throughout, a dedicated subwoofer amp, and sound deadening across all four doors. Custom mounts are fabricated for both front and rear doors, allowing proper 6" component speakers and tweeters to be fitted in all four door locations. A two-channel amplifier drives the front speakers; rear speakers run from the head unit. A dedicated mono amplifier powers a 10" slim subwoofer and enclosure — slim enough to sit on the rear wheel arch or behind the rear seat in dual cab models, underfloor or along the cargo wall in wagons. The head unit — factory Toyota or upgraded — benefits from a processor that cleans the signal before it reaches the amplifiers. Sound deadening across all four doors. The result is a completely different vehicle to listen to.

Rapid Radio has been installing and calibrating car audio systems in Auckland for over two decades. We work across the full spectrum — from everyday EVs through to Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Tesla — with every build calibrated by ear to the vehicle and the owner. No compromise installs. Factory-clean finish. Every time.
No two builds are the same — and that's the point.
Because the DSP is the engine of every upgrade, the hardware around it is entirely flexible. Entry-level speaker sets will sound dramatically better than the factory system — and world-class reference components will do things the factory engineers never imagined. We work across the full range, from practical upgrades to reference builds, and every system is calibrated by ear before you leave.

Why doesn't the 70 Series have door speakers from the factory?
Toyota simply didn't fit them. The 70 Series was designed as a workhorse, and the audio system reflects that priority. The factory setup uses small 4" speakers mounted under the dash, firing towards the floor. It works — it's just not good. From System Two onwards, we fabricate custom mounts and install proper speakers in the doors for the first time.
What's involved in fitting door speakers to a 70 Series?
Because the 70 Series has no factory door speaker locations, we cut the door cards and door steel to fabricate and fit custom mounts. This is a permanent modification — it can't be reversed. It's also why the improvement is so dramatic. You're not replacing inadequate speakers. You're adding speakers that were never there. Customers should factor this in when deciding — but in our experience, nobody has ever regretted it.
Does it matter which body style I have — single cab, dual cab, or wagon?
All three body styles are fully upgradeable across all three systems. The main difference is subwoofer placement at System Three level. Dual cab utes have space behind the rear seat for a larger enclosure. Single cab utes use an underseat position. Wagon and Troop Carrier variants use an underfloor or rear cargo wall position. We know all three configurations well and will recommend the best approach for your specific vehicle.
Is the sound deadening package worth it on a 70 Series?
Arguably more so than any other vehicle we work on. The 70 Series cabin is not quiet — road noise, tyre noise, and mechanical noise all compete with the audio system constantly. Sound deadening in the doors reduces acoustic loss and lets the speakers perform as designed. The Ultimate Sound Deadening Package goes further — floor, roof lining, rear wall — and makes the cabin a significantly more liveable space. Particularly effective in the wagon and Troop Carrier configurations.
Can you upgrade the head unit as well?
Yes. The factory Toyota head unit CAN stay in place, but it's not an amazing headunit. We can give you wireless AndroidAuto, wireless CarPlay, more cameras, even a larger screen right up to a 12" tablet the size of an iPad. Contact us to discuss the options.
How much does a 70 Series audio upgrade cost?
Pricing depends on the system level, body style, and whether a head unit upgrade is included. Contact us for a quote specific to your vehicle.
Will the upgrade affect how the 70 Series looks or functions?
The audio upgrade itself is invisible — no visible changes to the exterior, and nothing affects the 70 Series' capability or function. However, Systems Two and Three involve cutting the door cards and door steel to fabricate and fit the custom speaker mounts. This is a permanent modification. It's not reversible. Customers should factor this in when deciding — but in our experience, nobody has ever regretted it.
Can you add radar detection to a 70 Series?
Yes — radar and laser detection can be added as an optional extra alongside any audio system. Portable or stealth-installed options are available. Contact us to discuss what works best for your vehicle and how you use it.
